KDE is now my favorite desktop Date published: September 17, 2025 After switching from a traditional Sway setup to KDE on his gaming rig, the author is very impressed by KDE as a desktop environment, not only compared to other Linux desktops but also compared to Windows and macOS. Key Advantages of KDE Feature-rich: KDE offers extensive built-in features that often require third-party apps on other OSes. For example, the network applet shows detailed Wi-Fi info, including channel, signal, frequency, router MAC (BSSID), and includes a QR code generator for easy sharing with mobile devices. Integrated tools: Built-in screenshot tool that supports smart cropping and blur without needing external apps. "Window Rules" feature gives fine-grained control over app window behavior, like starting Steam without stealing focus. Flatpak permissions can be managed directly via System Settings. Hardware info is accessible through an Info Center (including SMART status). Ability to quickly prevent the screen and computer from sleeping, a function that typically needs separate apps on Windows/macOS. Performance: The author finds KDE faster and more responsive than Windows 11 on the same hardware and even snappier than macOS on a MacBook Pro M2 Pro. System Settings open nearly instantaneously, and KDE feels as fast as the lightweight Sway, with the option to enable or disable animations. Minor Issues Initial setup issues when using multiple displays: KDE assigned the taskbar to a TV used exclusively for gaming, making it invisible on the main monitor. This was fixed by manually adding a taskbar but was confusing at first. A few other minor glitches were encountered but none significant. Conclusion After about a week with KDE, the author enjoys this desktop environment like never before on Linux. KDE impresses with its usability, integration, and performance. Kudos to the KDE developers for creating such a polished, user-friendly experience. --- Visuals Included (Screenshots from the blog post) Wi-Fi information available via the network applet Flatpak permissions management screen System About information showing system details
